For Sam Thompson, Martial Arts has always been more than just physical training, it’s been a lifelong journey of discovery, discipline and growth. What began as a spark of curiosity at age 10 has transformed into a deep-rooted passion that spans nearly four decades and multiple disciplines, from Kempo and Kobudo to Kickboxing and Ninjutsu.

In this inspiring Q&A, we sit down with Sam to explore his journey from early training to founding Nin-te Ryu Martial Arts, a dynamic club that blends tradition and innovation into one powerful system. Sam shares the moments that shaped his path, the philosophy behind his teaching and how he keeps his classes fun, inclusive and rooted in community.

Whether you’re a complete beginner, a lifelong Martial Artist or someone seeking fresh motivation, Sam’s story is a reminder that the Martial Arts journey never truly ends – it just evolves. Let’s dive in!

Background in Martial Arts

The Beginning: How did you first get involved in the wonderful world of Martial Arts and what inspired you to have a go?

My Martial Arts journey started 37 years ago when I was 10 years old. I saw the original Karate Kid film and instantly started pestering my parents to start Karate. Then not long after that, Van Damme burst onto the scene with Bloodsport and Kickboxer and, I was blown away by his kicking ability. That shaped the first half of my training life in Karate and Kickboxing, wanting to be the best kicker I could be then, as an adult I discovered Kempo, Kobudo, Kickjutsu and Ninjutsu.

Your Journey: Can you share a bit about your training journey and any certifications you’ve proudly obtained?

My current grades are 4th Dan Kempo Karate/Kobudo, 4th Dan Ninjutsu and 2nd Dan Kickboxing.

Teaching Experience

Teaching Timeline: How long have you been sharing your passion for Martial Arts and teaching as an instructor?

I started teaching 11 years ago. It was something I’d wanted to do for sometime. So, I asked my Sensei if this was something he could help me with as, I don’t think being a black belt automatically means you can teach. Teaching is a separate skill that has to be learnt. Just like you have to learn Martial Arts, you also need to learn how to pass it on

After a few years, I ended up co-owning the Dojo with my Sensei until February 2018 when he retired. I then started on my own from March 2018.

Memorable Moments: Can you describe a memorable experience you’ve had as an instructor that still makes you smile?

The most memorable moment is the first person I took from white belt to black belt.

During lockdown, she then helped me create and co-found our own hybrid style that we call Ninte. We pressure tested everything from Kempo Karate and the Kobudo part of Ninjutsu, and later added the dynamic kicking from Kickboxing. So now, you can either study each aspect of it separately or learn a hybrid style mixing all three!

Philosophy and Approach

Teaching Philosophy: How would you describe your approach to teaching Karate, Kobudo and Kickboxing?

I like to show how they all relate, every kata or defence I teach in Karate. I will then show my students how those same movements are adapted to incorporate the weapons from Kobudo, or vice versa. Or how the footwork from certain throws or evasive movements in Kempo, are basically the same footwork for a spinning kick in Kickboxing. I get a real buzz from that kind of thing! I even encourage my students to come to seminars where we try different Martial Arts and see how what we do relates to other systems. So, I guess I’m not looking for what sets them apart but, what relates them.

Balanced Classes: How do you keep your classes fun and accessible for beginners while challenging more advanced students?

For beginners, I like to incorporate games that contain elements needed for the Martial Arts movements they are currently trying to learn as, this can alleviate the sense of pressure often associated with learning new things.

For the experienced student, we take those games to a higher level to challenge their skills more. This is something that can sometimes get lost on advanced students as, they should be having fun too.

Martial Arts Techniques and Training

Training Evolution: How does training evolve as one progresses from a novice to an advanced level?

In Karate and Kobudo, my students have to develop their own kata’s and application and, improve their own way of doing things.

In Kickboxing, student’s need to enhance their own pad drills and sparring sequences. That way, students can highlight their natural skills but, also see where they have areas to work on.

Preparation Practices: Are there any specific conditioning or mental preparation practices you recommend to your students for peak performance?

Just go in there with an open mindset, ready to learn no matter what level you’re coming in at. There is always more to learn!

Club and Community

Your Club: Tell us about the Martial Arts club you run. How long has it been a hub for Martial Arts enthusiasts?

We opened our club, Nin-te Ryu Martial Arts, in 2018 so, we have been going 7 years so far!

Community Building: How do you foster a sense of community and camaraderie within your club?

We like to think that we cater for all, from any walk of life. You are all welcome!

Safety First: What safety measures do you implement to ensure a secure and positive training environment?

All our instructors are DBS checked and fully insured.

Advice and Perspectives

Starting Martial Arts: What advice would you give to someone who is considering starting Martial Arts and might need a little encouragement?

Go for it! It could be the best decision of your life.

Equipment and Supplier

Choosing Blitz: Why did you choose Blitz as your equipment supplier for the club? Are there any particular products from Blitz that you highly recommend for Martial Arts training?

I think I started using Blitz in about 2010 and I’ve never looked back! The quality of the products and service has been awesome. A favourite of ours is the Student Karate Gi’s as they are perfect for what we do. The full gi for Karate and Kobudo and, the trousers with a T-Shirt are perfect for Kickboxing.
