Train Safely Outdoors This Summer

Because sunshine and side kicks go together beautifully.

When the sun’s out and the days are long, it’s the perfect time to take your Martial Arts training outdoors. Whether you’re perfecting your kata in the park, sparring with friends on the beach or shadowboxing in your backyard, nature offers a refreshing break from the four walls of the dojo.

But training in the Summer sun comes with its own set of challenges. To keep your practice powerful and safe, here are our top tips for enjoying Martial Arts under open skies.

☀️ 1. Respect the Sun (But Don’t Fear It)

Vitamin D is great for your body and mood but, too much sun can knock you out faster than a roundhouse to the head.

🌞 Sun Safety Tips:

  • Time it right: Avoid training during peak heat (usually 11am–3pm). Early mornings and golden-hour evenings are ideal.
  • Use high SPF sunscreen: Go for SPF 30 or higher, water resistant and sweat proof. Reapply every 2 hours, especially if you’re working hard.
  • Don’t forget your ears, neck and nose: These spots often get missed but burn easily!

💧 2. Hydration is a Martial Art Too

Sweat is a badge of honour but, dehydration isn’t. When training outdoors, your body loses fluids faster.

💦 Hydration Hacks:

  • Drink water before, during and after training.
  • Add electrolytes if you’re training intensely or for long periods.
  • Keep a chilled water bottle nearby. Wrap it in a towel to keep it cool longer.

👟 3. Choose Your Surface & Footwear Wisely

Grass feels soft but, uneven terrain can lead to wobbly stances. Sand builds strength but, tires your legs. Concrete is stable but, unforgiving.

🦶 Footwork & Footwear Tips:

  • On grass: Check for hidden holes or stones before training. Barefoot or lightweight Martial Arts Trainers offer light support.
  • On sand: Go barefoot for grip. Focus on slower, deliberate movements to build control and balance.
  • On concrete or patios: Wear cushioned Martial Arts trainers or cross-trainers. Avoid jumping or falling drills.

🥋 4. Dress for Combat and the Climate

Summer training gear should balance freedom of movement, sweat-wicking material and sun protection.

👕 Clothing Tips:

  • Lightweight uniforms (such as Blitz’s Polycotton Lightweight Karate Gi) keep you cool and mobile.
  • Compression wear helps reduce chafing and supports muscles.
  • A wide-brimmed cap or cooling bandana/towel is perfect between drills.

🌳 5. Make the Most of Nature’s Dojo

The great outdoors brings inspiration and variety to your martial arts training.

🧘 Solo or Group Ideas:

  • Kata under trees – Focus on rhythm and breath to the sounds of nature.
  • Shadow sparring at sunset – Perfect your form against your own silhouette.
  • Pad drills with a partner – Get your combos in while soaking up the fresh air. Try our Blitz Focus Pads for fast, fun striking.
  • Mobility and stretching by the beach – Warm sand + ocean breeze = bliss.
  • Stretch on a soft surface – Lay down a mat on patios or decking.

🌦 6. Watch the Weather. It’s Your Opponent Too!

Summer showers, sudden heatwaves or strong winds can change the game.

  • Check the forecast before you head out.
  • Have a backup indoor plan in case of rain or extreme heat.
  • Use natural shade, like trees or shelters, for rest periods.
