As the holiday season approaches, there’s no better time to bring a touch of festive fun into Martial Arts training! Whether you’re a Karate kid, a Judo enthusiast or a Taekwondo champ, adding holiday themed drills and games is a fantastic way to keep the energy up and spirits high at the dojo. Here are some creative, holiday inspired games and drills that blend skill building with a dash of seasonal cheer.

1. The ‘Elf Escape’ Agility Challenge

In this fast-paced game, students play the role of elves dashing through Santa’s workshop, practicing agility and speed. Set up cones or obstacles around the training area, simulating the bustling workshop environment. Students must navigate through without knocking anything over – just like an elf in action! For added challenge, use beanbags as ‘gifts’ that students must carry through the course without dropping. This is perfect for building footwork, balance and quick reflexes.

Holiday twist: Divide the class into teams, giving each team a ‘sleigh’ (a large pad or light mat) to pull along while they navigate the course. It’s all about teamwork and quick thinking!

2. Snowball Sparring

Who doesn’t love a good snowball fight? For this game, students will use soft foam balls as ‘snowballs’ in a playful sparring session. Pair students up and have them practice dodging, blocking and catching incoming ‘snowballs’ as part of their defensive training. Each dodge or block earns points, with bonuses for well executed techniques!

Holiday twist: To make it even more fun, add a ‘Snowman’ (a target or dummy) that each team has to protect from getting hit. This adds a fun twist and keeps students focused on protecting and defending while honing their blocking skills.

3. Reindeer Relay Race

Time for some team competition! Set up a relay course where students can show off their best holiday spirit. Students can ‘gallop’ like reindeer, carrying a baton (or ‘magic candy cane’) from one end of the dojo to the other. Each student has to complete a skill-specific challenge – such as a round of push-ups, kicks or punches – before passing the baton to the next team member.

Holiday twist: For extra holiday magic, add ‘power-ups’ like elf hats or antlers students can wear during the race. It’s a perfect way to train speed and endurance while adding a festive twist!

4. The Nutcracker Defence Drill

The Nutcracker is known for its quick moves and defensive skills! In this drill, students pair up and practice controlled blocks, focusing on accuracy and precision. The goal is to ‘crack’ the attack by blocking it with the right technique. Emphasise control to keep the practice safe, and keep the drill lighthearted by adding some fun music in the background.

Holiday twist: Use coloured pads or balloons as targets, calling out different colours to test students’ reaction times. It’s a great way to refine blocking techniques and have a laugh as they become quick-on-their-feet Nutcrackers!

5. Santa’s Sack Strength Circuit

In this holiday strength challenge, students get a ‘Santa’s Sack’ (a bag filled with light training weights, small pads or even stuffed toys) that they need to carry through a strength circuit. They’ll lift, squat and toss their way through a series of strength drills, each focusing on building Martial Arts power and stamina.

Holiday twist: To boost the festive mood, dress up the sack with red and white, or add a bit of holiday music in the background. Encourage friendly competition by timing each student’s round and rewarding progress.

6. Candy Cane Kicks

Get students in the holiday spirit with some fun-themed kick drills! Set up candy cane-striped cones (or real candy canes if you’re feeling festive) that students have to kick over at different levels. This helps them practice aim and precision with their kicks.

Holiday twist: Create a ’12 Kicks of Christmas’ drill where students perform different kicks in sequence, increasing intensity with each round. For each ‘kick of Christmas’, they get closer to earning a holiday treat!

7. Holiday Trivia Balance Game

Combine a little holiday fun with balance training in this unique game. Students stand on one foot or in a balanced stance while answering Martial Arts or holiday trivia questions. If they answer correctly, they keep their balance. If they answer incorrectly, they have to switch to a different balance posture. This game is both fun and great for improving stability and focus!

Holiday twist: Questions can range from Martial Arts knowledge to holiday trivia. It keeps everyone laughing and learning while improving balance and concentration.

8. Gift Wrapping Grappling

A playful take on grappling and groundwork, this drill has students ‘wrap up’ their opponent’s arm or leg using controlled holds. It’s all about practicing safe grappling techniques while adding a holiday vibe. Students work on positioning, technique and control without any aggressive moves.

Holiday twist: Have students ‘unwrap’ themselves or a partner from a controlled hold or grip, helping them work on counters and reversals with a fun ‘gift’ theme!

9. Santa’s Sack Target Practice

Hang a decorated sack (Santa’s Sack) from a stationary point and encourage students to practice their punches, kicks or weapon strikes by aiming for the sack. This drill sharpens targeting and control as students try to ‘hit the mark’ without knocking over the sack.

Holiday twist: Add small bells or decorations to the sack so it makes a jingle when hit, making it extra fun and rewarding!

10. Silent Night Meditation

End a festive training session on a relaxing note with a ‘Silent Night’ meditation. Dim the lights, play some calming holiday music and guide students through a short breathing and mindfulness session. This is a great way to help students relax, focus and find some peace amid the holiday hustle and bustle.

Holiday twist: Share a few words about Martial Arts values like respect, gratitude and discipline, connecting these ideals with the spirit of the season. It’s a lovely way to close out the class and send students off with a warm feeling.

These festive drills and games bring holiday cheer into training while helping students build essential martial arts skills. Whether you’re looking for a way to end the year on a high note or want to keep classes fresh and fun, these ideas are sure to bring smiles to students of all ages.
