World Judo Day 2025: Peace

Every year on 28 October, Judoka around the world celebrate World Judo Day. A day dedicated to the philosophy, values and global community of Judo. More than a Martial Art, Judo is a way of life that nurtures respect, humility and mutual understanding. Principles that feel especially relevant in today’s world.

This year, the theme for World Judo Day 2025 is Peace, a perfect reflection of Judo’s deeper purpose; to create harmony within ourselves and with those around us, both on and off the tatami.

Why 28 October?

World Judo Day marks the birthday of Jigoro Kano, the visionary founder of Judo. Kano Shihan’s dream was to use the discipline of Martial Arts to build better people. Individuals who value self-control, respect and cooperation. His principle of ‘Seiryoku Zenyo, Jita Kyoei‘, meaning ‘maximum efficiency, mutual welfare and benefit‘, continues to guide Judoka across the globe.

Kano believed that Judo wasn’t about defeating others but, about improving oneself and contributing positively to society. The 2025 theme of peace embodies that belief, encouraging us all to use the lessons learned through Judo to bring calm, understanding and kindness into our communities.

The 2025 Theme: Peace

This year’s theme, Peace, invites everyone in the Judo community to think beyond throws and techniques. Peace begins with self-discipline, the ability to stay composed under pressure, to respect differences and to use strength responsibly.

On the tatami, peace means practicing with care for your partner. Off the tatami, it means applying Judo’s teachings to handle conflict with empathy and respect. Whether it’s encouraging a new student, bowing with sincerity or simply training with a calm mind, every act of kindness contributes to the spirit of peace.

How to Celebrate World Judo Day

Here are a few meaningful ways to join the celebration on 28 October:

  • Train mindfully: Focus your session on control, precision and cooperation; the true essence of Judo.
  • Promote peace: Teach or demonstrate Judo’s principles to others, at your dojo, school or community centre.
  • Reflect: Take a quiet moment before or after training to appreciate how Judo has helped you grow mentally and emotionally.
  • Share your story: Post a photo or video with #WorldJudoDay and #JudoForPeace, spreading Kano’s message to the world.

Why Judo Builds Peace

Judo teaches us to fall, to rise and to try again, all while respecting our partner. It reminds us that strength without compassion is meaningless and that true victory lies in self-mastery. These lessons naturally create more peaceful people. Individuals who approach life with balance, understanding and patience.

In an age where division can seem stronger than unity, Judo remains a practice of connection; a space where everyone, regardless of background, trains together under the same values of respect and cooperation.
