Pauline Laville-Bindra 8th Dan performing an attack on Hirokazu Kanazawa 10th Dan
It is with great sadness that we are forced to face this day with the passing of a loving wife, mother, founder and President of Blitzsport Corporation: Pauline Laville-Bindra. BD/MA (Hons) in Theology and globally one of karate’s highest graded leading ladies, 8th dan.
The loss comes to a great shock to us all as she inspired many with her determination in the martial arts, her complete devotion to Christianity and her passion for her family’s strong involvement in the continuation of her life’s work.
Her martial arts journey began in 1957 at Middlesborough Judo club, shortly after gaining her brown belt and in 1961 she took an interest in karate in England’s first dojo. Her training became under the guidance of Sensei Kanazawa who awarded her, her 1st dan. She then continued under Sensei Enoeda who out of honoring her spirit in the art presented her his own black belt. After many years she continued her training with the help of Sensei Enoeda by moving to America becoming a student under the Legendary Sensei Richard Kim 10th Dan.
She had often spoke about how the hardships of being a woman in a then dominant male art, which forced her to fight for her right to stay and compete. She stated that on more than one occasion, some wished she would quit as the presence of a woman in the dojo was mocking the art of karate. Despite this, she continued and proved that her spirit could overcome the gender battle, gaining respect and adoration from many of her peers.

Pauline Laville-Bindra 8th Dan with Masatoshi Nakayama 10th Dan
In her life she achieved not only dan grades in Karate but also was part responsible for the movement of karate throughout its growth in England. From being a founder member of all the governing bodies of Karate in England from the BKCC right up to EKGB. She was also the founder member of the KUGB, and started Thames Karate, which in the late 70′s was 10,000 members strong. She has taught many of England’s top Shotokan Instructors of today, who now head their own associations many National, International and JKA champions in Kumite and Kata.
She was a feared instructor who continued teaching harsh and character testing lessons that she once herself had to endure. Students traveled from all over the country to train with her. As the highest ranking female in Europe and possibly worldwide she is a legend in her own right, proving that gender does not determine spirit.
In the last 7 years of her life, she slowly handed over the responsibility of Blitz to her family so she could completely devote herself to Christ and recently gained an Honors Degree and Masters in Systematic Theology. From this she started her ministry “The Children of Christ – hope for the lost.” A charity based and outreach program helping those who were on the verge of giving up on life and empowering them with the knowledge and confidence to keep going. The confidence she acquired through her conditioning in karate.
As we are coming to terms knowing that time will never heal the pain of our tragic loss, we understand the importance to continue her legacy living our lives through the words that she bestowed upon us:
“For It is not the number of trophies or Dan Grades that I have won or achieved that give me a sense of success, it is the strength and discipline of my character which has been tempered through the art of Karate and the Love of God which has helped me survive and succeed in all that I do. I thank The Lord Jesus for everything that I am and have achieved”.
May the Lord rejoice in the return of His loving child… and may her spirit be instilled within us all as we face our opponents. May she rest in peace on the passing of her final grading…
Amen.

We are so sorry to hear this bad news, she will be missed
Pauline’s life story should be placed more widely within the public domain as it must surely serve as inspiration for many young people struggling to find a positive role model. I never met Pauline, I am sure it was a privilage for those who did.
One of my fisrt training lessons was in 1967 under Pauline Laville she and Ray Fuller would visit us each weekend at Southsea Community Centre. She made a big contribution to the early days of Portsmouth Karate Club and was a big inspiration to female Karate. will be sadly missed.
With great sadness to hear of the loss of a great Karate Ka, and person. R.I.P.
These times are always very hard, but my students and myself send sincere condolences to Paulines family and may she rest in peace.
We are all incredibly saddened and sorry for your loss, our thoughts and best wishes go out to all of those affected by this time of passing. May she rest in peace.
Peace Be The Journey Linda x
R.I.P Pauline, I was sad to hear of your passing but pleased to have read you lived a full and happy life.
You will be missed by all. God bless you R.I.P
This is very sad news. My thoughts go out to the family. R.I.P.
Truly remarkable woman that has left her mark on society. A sad loss
God must have better places for this great lady of inspiration to look after .
It is always with sadness when great people get taken away from us. SHE WILL LIVE LONG IN EVERY BODYS HEARTS RIP
I did not know Pauline but am moved by her life of faith, trusting in the Lord Jesus’ promises to the end:
‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’ John 3:16
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even though they die;” John 11:25
So sorry to hear of the passing of this dear lady. I am so pleased that she knew the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal saviour for the scriptures tell us quite clearly “neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven whereby we must be saved.” Though this is a sad loss for her family Pauline has simply gone home, to be with the Lord, which is far better eternally secure in the loving arms of Jesus, absent from the body, and present with the Lord.
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved!
Pastor Ray Pulman, Zion Chapel, Deptford.

What a shame I did not know this story of Pauline before her death, she sounds like a remarkable woman and first and foremost a faithful Christian servant. Solomon tells us in Ecleciaties that all lifes ahievements under the sun are vanities. All that she achieved is gone from her save one, her relationship with our God. God gives us gifts to use in the best way he inteneded and so in this way Pauline honoured God with her achievements, since they were given to God and were surely achieved through the power of the Holy Spirit that undoubtably was within her. Surely she will be richly rewarded in her new life with our Saviour Jesus Christ.
an inspiration to so many! a sad loss a true follower of the ” way of Bushido”

Osu,
Whilst I was not fortunate to meet this honourable lady – I’ve heard of her many times during my visits to the UK and in chatting to many different karate teachers.
I am now more sad that I did not make a greater effort to meet with her and to soak up some of her ideas and thoughts.
I can only wish her family and those at Blitz strength during these tough times. No one else can feel your pain, but sometimes knowing others care & share your pain & loss may be a source of strength & courage.
May it help you to 2 know there are others who are thinking of you & caring about you.
Osu~!

I wish I had known such a wonderful example to the world of Martial Arts, she was and always will be an inspiration to all who follow her, the right to be remembered was earned and not awarded, a truly wonderful lady, let all the ladies out there involved in the Martial Arts stop and think for a short while just who made it all possible. Condolences from myself and all my students.
Although I did not know of Paulline Laville Bindra, it is inspirational to read of her many accomplishments.
Discrimination and prejudice in whatever guise is unpleasant and unwarranted. The martial arts purport to be open for all, but by the division, egos and negative behaviour we know this is not always true. It is therefore refreshing to read of someone who rose above the crowd to fight for her right to be accepted. As a disciple of the Art of Karate, she spread its beauty and her knowledge to all and sundry.
Let us rejoice that there was a torch bearer to light the passage for so many. Let us aspire to follow in the footsteps of her many positive actions and let us take heart and comfort she did indeed do, what she loved.
Rest in Peace Paulline Laville Bindra, …. Your Work is Done.

Perennial good season.
– The Golden Age of Zen,
sincere condolences to all her family. RIP Pauline.
It is sad to hear of the loss of a lady who seems to hav made a remarkable impact this sport, that still in this day and age see women as lesser than our male counterparts. I have practised MA both Karate and Taekwondo for 25 years and still have to prove myself. I admire this lady in what she did and hope her memory continues to do.
It was a lady just like this that made me want to do what i do today i hope i can make half the difference that you did.
May you rest in peace and my sympathy to the family.
Karen

What a shock! I’m sorry to hear of such a tragic loss. May you (the family) find comfort in this time of pain. I studied with Pauline at Uni. She was an inspiration. She never gave up on the important things in life. She always seemed to have a fighting spirit. May her life inspire us all to better things.
Because God is – Pauline will be again.
Until the Second Coming Pauline…
Thank you, Bindra-dono, for passing on not only your technique but your spirit and determination.
There are many who must also be giving their thanks to you that they did not in the brief span of your life.
Namu Amida Butsu.
I didn’t know Pauline but it sounds like she was a remarkable woman. who touched so many lives. Such a sad loss to the world and the family of martial arts. Deepest sympathy to Pauline’s family, friends and all at Blitz Sport. May she rest in peace.
It is hard to contain and comprehend such loss. I was in the same class with Pauline for both her BD and MA. She imparted to me the spirit of hard work and determination. She was very supportive and caring. I will miss her. Hope the family will be able to take on from where she has left, waiting for that great reunion day.
May her acts of love live on in the family.
I have only just heard the news a few hours ago, and I am in complete shock.
My thoughts are with the family who have lost an inspirational lady, mother, wife, and friend.
I studied theology with Pauline, and admired her determination and quest for helping the marginalized and ignored in our society. Her kindness will always remain with me.
And after reading the other comments the legacy of Pauline is the lives she has planted her wonderful seeds, that are growing into fruitful trees.
See you on that resurrection morning Pauline.
I never met Pauline, but having been a customer from Blitz from the early days of its foundation, I admired her efforts and achievement present in her high reputation and steem; and now I am saddened.
” Death is only a passing step in the universal concept of movement, after a pause we go on”. May God bless her.

I am deeply saddened at the passing of Pauline. She still had a lot to offer and had done much to enhance the cause of Christ. In the short time that I knew her I discovered that she was a very purposeful woman with a vision and passion for serving the Lord. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I had the pleasure of meeting Pauline, once. Mt thoughts are with Pauline’s family.
I first heard of Pauline when she was interviewed on a Martial Arts t.v. documentary some years ago.I can hear her ditinctive Teesside accent now as she spoke about her success in Karate and of the growing success of the Blitz corporation.I remember thinking about the tremendous character and humility that shone through Pauline as she spoke.Being from the North East of England myself originally,a Karate man and a devoted Christian, I am deeply saddened by this news.Although I did not know Pauline personally, I know in my heart that she ‘still is’ one truly amazing lady.I know she will be truly missed. My deepest condolences to all family and friends.Your brother in Christ Tony.
Deepest sympathy and prayers goes out for Lee and the Bindra family.
Pauline had a big heart for people; a very humble person. Anything she could do for any one she would do, she did not like to turn any one away whom she felt it was in her power to help. She gave sound business advice when I need it – her advise with her sense of humour will always remain with me. She was a practical person who had practical solutions. She would also go the extra mile. What a great contributor to the establishment of our church in Plumstead and in the community! I thank God for her life. R.I.P Pauline.

My son and I had the pleasure of training under Master Pauline on one occasion … but … one occasion, was all it took to realise that we were indeed in the presence of someone who could command absolute respect.
Please accept our sincere condolences from the Hansen Family (Erith Dojo).
My whole body completely froze when i heard this very very sad news as i was happily shopping at Blitz. This was not what i wanted to hear and i completely was lost for words. As i left the shop with my daughter, i sat in the car for 15 minutes looking in the distance. She asked me ” daddy you ok?” and my answer to her was ” daddy is not ok at the moment because we just lost a woman i only met twice but who to me was a very discreet icon”.
It should not happen to people like pauline who had so much love in her heart and yet still so much to give to those whose lives she touched. my and my family’s hearts go to the whole family at these very sad times.
God took his beautiful child away! may she rest in peace.
I have so many memories of Sensei Pauline. I have trained under her on only a few occasions and shall remember those times painfully, yet joyfully. The last time was when she taught an MMA class. There were professional cagefighters, bouncers etc in this particular class. Everybody was thoroughly shattered by the end of it but she still received a standing ovation from the whole class.
However, the one thing I remember most, is the time I went to the Bindra home for a meeting with Sensei Lee. I arrived at 7.30pm but Sensei Lee had been called away urgently and I was invited in by Sensei Pauline. Before this time, we had only had a few brief conversations between us. Within a couple of hours, we had swapped many memories, opinions, thoughts, ideas and beliefs.
There were a few things that soon stood out amongst many topics we covered that night. Number one – It soon became clear how much love Sensei Pauline had for Jesus. Number two – It was also very clear how proud she was of her family. Number three – whatever you do, give it 100% and nobody can take it away from you. Always try to do everything to the best of your ability – that is all Sensei Pauline ever asked of anyone.
I left the home at 11pm that night not quite believing that the time had flown by so quickly. Every time our paths crossed since then, Sensei would always have the time to ask about my family and make sure that we were ok.
I will miss Sensei Pauline – not just for the killer lessons, but for her humility even during adversity. She was a true fighter right up until the very end. The rest of the family have the same traits and I know that they will all continue her legacy in several ways.
God Bless You Sensei Pauline.
Bob Slamon
It has now been 22 days since Sensei Pauline has joined God in Heaven and yet it still feels like an impossible reality.
I consider myself lucky to have met Sensei. Not just because of her renown teaching methods (she always managed to get 110% out of you, even when you thought you had nothing else to give) but more, because I had the opportunity of talking to Her, and to have wonderful discussions during which I learned much from Sensei inquisitive mind.
Sensei believed in God more than anybody I know. But, Hers, just like with the Martial Arts, wasn’t a blind believe but a conviction she arrived to by understanding.
I recall one occasion when she asked me a simple question (I thought), “Why Jesus offered fish to eat to the 1000 if they are also, just like us, Is creatures?” My simple answer was that, at that time, people were not vegetarian and it would have been the normal thing to do.
However, Jesus would have not done something for ‘that’ time as His learning is for ‘ALL’ the times. Under this angle, it became a very complex question to answer.
This was Sensei. Somebody always wanting to know and to understand more. Constantly trying to better herself in mind, body and spirit. Somebody whom, by her example, has inspired and guided many. Her teaching will continue and will be alive through the generation. Her life was so full and she accomplished so much than many, including myself, will have to leave for hundreds of years to equal Her.
Sensei, You will always be in our minds and our hearts. Ossu
Sensei when i made the cross for your church, that was our first real chat, we talked and laughed it was great you changed my views on quite a few subjects. i will always remember you god bless Sensei Pauline.
Paul Claremont
I am so very shocked. I have just read this on FB and am devastated.
My condolences to the Bindra family. Such fantastic memories training hard under the great lady’s watchful eye, many years ago. The epitome of fighting spirit.
Sensei Pauline your influence on me as a child in Karate and your effection as an adult will effect me until I am an old man. To be half the person you were would make me a special person. Until we meet again you will leave a void in me that only sheer determination will fill. The world has lost a beautiful influence but god has gained a magnificent companion. I am so sorry to Lee, Eldia, dan and Jason for your sudden loss and my heart is with you always. God bless.
If my memory serves me correctly, Pauline Bindra graded me to 9th Kyu in early 1984 in a small dojo above a working mens club in Northumberland Heath. All these years later I am still training in Shotokan and despite the time gone by I can still remember her presence as she arrived that cold winter’s evening. I cannot claim to have known her as well as others here well but I send my condolences to Lee, Elida, Danny and Jason
Deepest Sympathy to all the Bindra Family on your great loss.
I have been a customer of the Bindra’s since they first opened their shop in Welling.
However, I first met Pauline in the early 70′s when I was a 1st kyu. I remember training at Pauline’s club one night and doing kumite with her -Wow! A real fighter with such a big heart for one so small.
Thinking of you all at this time.
Colin
So sorry to hear about the tragic loss of this great lady I’m sure her legacy will live on and continue to be an inspiration to all women in Karate, thank you Sensei for helping to pave the way. Ossu.
I was shoked to hear of Sensei Pauline Biondra’s death. Condolences to her family and friends from us at Knights Karate Club.
I was a member of ISK during the ’80s and 90′s and received my 2nd kyu from a panel which included Pauline. Also remember the ISK competitions in Crook Log etc. Tough lady and shows that us women can be tough too. Oss.
I want to pass on my thoughts and prayers to Jason and his family at this sad time. I am so sorry for your loss.
Much love… Anita
I wish to offer my sincere condolences to Sensei Lee and family at this time.
Pauline has been an inspiration to those she has known, met and taught.
Her reputation has been an ispiration to those who know of her.
She lives on forever in the hearts and minds of all of those people.
We have just heard this very sad news and we are in shock. Our hearts are with you Jason and Lee. We remember Pauline as an amazing and yet humble force touching the lives of all she was in contact with. We remember her zeal to reach out to those who needed support and encouragement as she had once done in her life and will never forget her tender testimony of her journey to Christ. We also remember her as a wonderful mother and a devoted wife. So so sad that she had to leave so soon. Sending love to you Jason and Lee. xxx

I did not know Pauline, but obviously she was loved by many people, I want to pass on my thoughts and prayers to Jason and his family at this sad time. I speak for everyone from South England Martial Arts to say so sorry for your loss. She will be surely missed by all who knew her and all her student’s. I feel somewhat deprived, that I did not know her.
Our thought’s go out to all her family.
Sensei Pauline will be missed not only as a fantastic (and scary!) karate teacher, but also as a strong woman who provided a fantastic role model.
The karate lessons that she taught me were memorable for all the right reasons and she knew how to get the best out of her students. I never was sure in the lessons if it was a good thing that she knew my name, I certainly heard it being shouted across the hall when I let my stance slip!
Outside of karate Pauline was a lovely lady to know and always made the time to ask how myself and my family were doing. I have great respect for all the things that she achieved in her lifetime.
My sincere condolences go to Lee, Elida, Danny and Jason at this difficult time. May each day become easier to bear and may her name be spoken with fond memories of all the fantastic times you had together as a family. I will keep Pauline and all of you in my prayers.
Caroline Fairhurst
I was extremely lucky to have trained under Sensei Pauline and even after all these years I still have not forgotten the physicality and spirit of her lessons and I will endeavour to continue training in this way as a tribute to a most extraordinary person.
May Sensei Pauline rest in peace for eternity and my love and thoughts are with Sensei Lee and family.
Just heard the news from one of my students.
Sending the Bindra family , Lee, Elida, Danny, Jason my deepest condolences.
A truly amazing women, who’s legacy, achievements and contribution to the martial arts world will always be remembered.
‘Rest in Peace Pauline.’

We will also be collecting donations and this will be given to woman’s aid.
I was shocked to hear of the sad passing of Sensei Pauline Bindra and would like to offer my sincerest condolences to her family and friends. I became aware of Sensei Bindra around ten years ago and was impressed by her determination and integrity. My Sensei started his training in Karate a short time after Sensei Bindra and he trained under Sensei Bell too. For what it’s worth I think Sensei Bindra will continue to be an inspiration to men and women who are made aware of her, both within Karate and beyond.
May she rest in peace.
I did not know Pauline personally, in fact I never actually met her! I was just seaching through this site and am touched that so many people have spent time writing such wonderful things about her life. I hope you rest in peace and God bless x
Please forgive the lateness of this posting but I have only just heard of Paulines passing.
There are a great many lovely memoies that I could share about Pauline, Lee and their loving family but I would prefer to keep those private. I would however like to state that Pauline was a very unique lady and had a great ability to make the amazing seem possible. She lead from the front in terms of female martial arts exponents but she did it because of her love of karate and not for the glory. She was the greatest female karateka and business woman this country will I believe, ever see but again she did all that she did, to push herself and provide a platform of security for her family and network of devoted friends.
Pauline will be very much missed by those that knew her (and because of the reach of her influence) by many that were not as fortunate to make her aquaintance.
My only regret is that over recent years I have not been in contact and I would have prefered to tell her this to her face;
“Pauline, you made the grade in everything that you undertook to do, you set a path for all others to follow and you will forever be remebered for all that you achieved but more importantly by the people whose lives you affected in your uniquely positive way”. Thank you, Oss.x
I will say a prayer for you Lee, Elida, Danny and Jason. God Bless.
Paul, Donna, Paige and Pierce. xxxx
I was shocked to learn of Pauline’s death and truly saddened at this loss to karate. I always admired her dedication to karate. Pauline was a truly inspirational figure, whose karate was exceptional. A strong, friendly and courteous woman. Over the last few years I had lost touch with her except for a couple of phone conversations, but my memories of her stretch back 35 years. She will be sadly missed. R.I.P.
I was shocked to hear of the sad passing of Pauline and would like to offer my sincere condolence to her family and friends.
What a lovely video. I never met Pauline but have heard so much about her bravery and determination during the last nearly 30 years through my training and as secretary of an international shotokan association. She has inspired more people than any of us realise and from what little I know she was a true example of the “Do” in karate-do.
R.I.P Pauline and please don’t give Funakoshi and the rest of them too hard a time when your in Heaven SKC !!!
My condolences to those she leaves behind and God bless
Very sad news. Pauline will be missed by many people for many reasons. Our condolences to those who will miss her most.
I must admit that due to the insular nature of my previous training I was unaware of many great people in the wider martial arts world until fairly recently. I have read all you have sent on Sensei Pauline Bindra; this is obviously a huge loss to you and the wider world…please accept my condolences.

I am shocked to hear of the sad passing of Pauline.
Lee, your family were always kind to me and Pauline is a great inspiration to so many. I would like to offer my sincere condolences to you all.
Pauline was and will always be a legend, I never met her but she inspired me and made me proud to be a female karateka. I started Judo at Middlesbrough Budokan then went into karate and I’d heard of her back then in the 80′s. My thought’s and sincere condolences are with her family and friends. Her spirit and karate will live on. xxx
A lady and a terrific karate woman, such a tragic loss to us all. May you rest in peace Pauline, my deepest sympathy to the Bindra family.
So sad to lose yet another great name in the realms of the martial arts,
But as a child of Jesus. Our sister in both the realm of martial Arts and within the family of Christ Lives on in eternity. Pauline has left her footprints in OUR SAND.
Praise God……
So sad to find out about the passing of Sensei Pauline Bindra.
My wife and son have just started training with I.S.K. and I will soon be joining them. In researching the dojo, I came to realise what a truly inspiring person she must have been, and this is even more evident in all the tributes above.
We hope her spirit lives on, both in the I.S.K. dojos, and at home.
Our sincere condolences to Sensei Lee and family.
Pauline was my first contact with Shotokan Karate when she instructed at the London School of Economics Karate club in 1983. She was truly an inspirng figure who positively influenced many students and instilled in them a love for Karate which remains with us to this day. My sincere condolences to Sensei Lee and the rest of her family.
May you rest in peace Pauline, you have worked well in the martial arts and you will be always remember, in the philosophy of discipline you have talk to others and others will pass this skill onwards deepest sympathy

Well Lee, what a total shock to hear of your beloved Pauline’s sudden death. I know how much she meant to you – really the love of your life in the very fullest sense. A marriage made in heaven and so a really sad loss! I am still shocked now.
Thank God you have a lovely family to support you and for which you and Pauline should be rightly proud. She was a decent soul (indeed a true mensche!) and clearly an inspiration to generations of martial artists. What a legacy! She will not be forgotten.
Best wishes to you all.

Oh Ho!!! I have just came to know about the passing of Pauline Bindra’s death, one long year after she passed away, while surfing the site. I live in Kolkata, India and had the good fortune to meet her thrice in her shop, in 1990, 1993 & 1995 during my visits to England. I went there to bought books and a few other martial arts equipments for my collection. I heard much about her from my sensei and good friend Nick Adamou. My thought’s and sincere condolences are with her family and friends. Osu!!!
