Blitz asks Lewis what it takes to get to the top, when so many people fail!

Lewis Pettitt
At what age did you start boxing?
I started at the age of 9.
Where do you currently train?
I train at the Fit Factory in Deptford, however I leant all my skills from my dad who runs Nemisis ABA Boxing Club.
Who or what inspires you to fight?
To be the best and to be world Champion.
What’s the most momentous fight in your life?
I fought all over the world for Enlgand against various countries but my professional debit was the biggest fight so far. I had 180 people watching along with Sky television filming. It was a big occasion being my first fight with no heard guard or vest and smaller gloves.
What’s your current fight record to date?
Amateur – 80 fights, won 60. Pro – 1 fight 1 win.
Tell us what your typical day consists of
Running every day, sitting in saunas and not eating a proper meals all week adds up to why I think boxing is one of the hardest sports in the world.
I live with scales under my bed and check my weight at least 2-3 times a day!! I don’t go out with clubbing or drinking its mainly a quiet cinema trip with no sweets or ice cream just a bottle of water for me.
I often think why do I do boxing, why do I run, starve, watch what I eat and get punch in the head what for? It’s defiantly a drug and I’m addicted to it, the thrill of winning is amazing, since I was 9 years old I’ve never had longer then 2-3weeks out of the gym, I start to miss it so much and have to go back, after a holiday I’m itching to get back to the gym.
As a pro – the eating and making weight is done totally different now, there’s no more starving or drinking one can of coke cola per day, now its 3 litres of water, and four small healthy meal of grilled fish and chicken with porridge or poached eggs in the morning and fruit! Its much better as the making weight side of the amateur used to kill me and make my training routines very hard. An 8 mile run with no food in my body used to feel like 15! Now its more like 8 again!
The training as a pro is much harder, 2-3 hours in the gym straight from work, then twice a week straight home to do a 5 mile run, and twice a week straight home to do a 7-8 mile jog.
I get Saturday’s off, it my only day off, although the diet is still strict, it’s a much harder life style as a pro you have to live it 24/7, as an amateur you could cheat – eat sugary low fat foods, drink cans of fizzy drink for energy just before training, now I haven’t had a fizzy drink or bar of chocolate since Christmas. I feel much healthier now and cannot wait till I fight.
Do any other members of your family box?
My younger brothers both do. Both will be future champions. My dad coaches.
What are your goals for the future?
To win as many titles as possible, however long term to become a world champion.
Do you wish to enter the Olympics or have any thoughts on this?
I have now signed a professional contract and will be eligible for the Olympic Games.
Why do you choose Blitz?
Good quality equipment especially the Badbreed which is growing within boxing.
